This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
