At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
